What we can and can't make into a stencil & design constraints

You may notice that on our custom product pages we say that you can upload anything to us and we’ll make it a stencil. We really mean it! Unlike more traditional printers, we don’t require any specific file type. You don’t need to optimize your file to any specifications other than size. We don’t need a vector file, or even a high-quality file. You can submit an Illustrator logo file, a photo you took on your cell phone or even a screenshot of what you want. Our designers will be able to turn whatever you give us into a stencil so you can create a work of art.

Here’s a list of some different kinds of file types we accept:

  • JPEG

  • PNG

  • PDF

  • TIFF

  • AI

  • PSD

That being said, the better the quality of the file sent, the better your final product will be. For example, if you send a grainy photo, we might have to do some guesswork when it comes to creating a stencil. Of course, you’ll be able to see the design and all changes we make during the proof process. Check out our article all about proofs for more information.

If you're ordering a custom mylar stencil, large stencil, metal stencil, adhesive stencil, coffee stencil or t-shirt stencil, you’ll want to be aware of some of the design constraints. These stencils, as opposed to layered stencils, will only produce a single color when painted. Keep this in mind when thinking about your project and what type of stencil will fit best. For more information about types of stencils, check out our article about stencil materials.

When it comes to what we can and can’t make into a stencil, we take this issue on a case by case basis. While we can take most files and turn them into stencils, there are a few cases where we know we won’t be able to make a perfect final product.

Here are the two constraints we face when designing stencils:

  • Intricacy

  • Size

We can make stencils in any size larger than a few inches. We can also make very intricate designs thanks to our precise laser cutting machines. However, it's very difficult for us to make very small, complex designs. Of course, if you are unsure about whether or not we will be able to create your design in the desired size, please contact our customer service and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
